This issue is the most complex. After s century of centralization, when the state was the instrument of building Ethiopian society the present politics, at least, ideologically removed from this task from the government.
What can hold together such a diversed country? Perhaps, the history?

"Peopleness" is the modest difficult category. What is it? Nation? Society? Today Ethiopians use very losely the term "Ethiopianess" -- but how would we define it?
Something which goes beyond religion, ethnicity and language. Of course, we know it -- the state. But the state is seen as the apparatus of supression, today, yesterday ... and tomorrow. So, what make so many and so different peoples into Ethiopians?
This question is difficult for many multi=ethnic countries. We see new wars of separation everywhere. "The Right of Self-Determination"? But are they better off after the divorce?
